What is a bumper dock?
Dock bumpers are essential for the protection of a dock, any associated buildings, trailers and employees. The impact force of a backing truck ranges from 100,000 to 3,000 lbs, and it’s not hard to imagine how this could cause significant damage not only to the structure of the building and the truck itself, but to any innocent bystanders.
Install sufficient, highly durable dock bumpers though, and you could help to protect your building, equipment and employees/customers/ from serious damage and injury. Designed to absorb roughly 80% of the impact force that a trailer compresses against a dock, they provide you with economical and practical protection.
What are the different elements of dock bumpers?
There are two main types of dock bumpers, and these are molded rubber dock bumpers, and laminated dock bumpers. The former is designed for low-traffic dock applications, while the latter affords more heavy-duty, industrial protection. Sometimes, steel face plates are added for high-frequency and heavy impact applications, too. Molded dock bumpers are made from fiber reinforced prime rubber with nylon, while laminated dock bumpers are made from rubber that has been sandwiched together with heavy-duty structural steel angles, and then connected with steel tie rods.

The thickness of a dock bumper
It’s recommended that the thickness of a dock bumper be at least 4 – 4.5 inches in order to effectively protect the dock from the full impact of a backing trailer. With a 5.5 – 6-inch-thick bumper, greater impact absorption is created for moderate to heavy traffic applications. When it comes to dock bumpers, it’s true to say that bigger is usually better, but be careful that you don’t reduce the loading dock levelers lip projection onto the bed of the trailer should you increase the bumper projection beyond recommended standards.
The height of a dock bumper
Ensure that the vertical height of the dock bumper can accommodate the maximum and minimum height of the trailer when the suspension system’s air is released, if your dock services air-ride trailers. Most molded dock bumpers are available in a variety of widths and heights.
Dock bumper mounting
Laminated dock bumpers have between 4 and 6 mounting holes to help secure the bumper tightly to the dock, and come with 5/8-inch x 5-inch anchor bolts.

Able to be placed in a number of different positions, these rubber docks are adjustable and typically have a lifespan of more than 4 times that of standard dock bumpers.
Extra-length loading dock bumpers
These laminated dock bumpers come in extra lengths and are ideal for loading docks with installed dock seals, or where temperature control is required. The loading dock bumper and the dock seal work together to make a complete seal from the truck to the dock.
Extra-thick loading dock bumpers
If you require stand-out distance from dock seals due to steel ramps, canopied docks or overhangs, then these extra-thick loading dock bumpers are ideal.
Steel-face dock bumpers
If abrasions are noticed from the motion of the trailer moving up and down, or any material requires extra protection, these bumpers offer great protection against friction.
Dura-soft dock bumpers
With their unique ‘loop’ design on the bumper pads, these offer the very best protection.
Molded loading dock bumpers
If used in a low traffic truck door, these heavy-duty molded bumpers give excellent protection.
